Who inspired you to start sailing?
My Dad raced in the America's Cup and Whitbread Race, so it was pretty inspiring following my parents around the world at a young age, and they both encouraged me to give it a go.

First boat:

First sailing club:
Salterns SC

Childhood hero?
Ronaldo (Brazilian)

When did you know you wanted sailing to be a career rather than a hobby?
When they started giving careers advice at school it really cemented the idea I already had of sailing as a career!

What do you love most about sailing?
The feeling when you really get a boat to light up - everything tuned, perfectly balanced and working together.

What has sailing taught you?
It's taught me so many transferrable and useful skills, but from a competitive perspective it teaches you to filter out the unimportant bits and what you can't control.

Favourite ever sailing race?
The medal race at the 2011 49er Worlds in Perth - my family were there, it was windy and it was the perfect venue with a big crowd on a grandstand right next to the start.

How do you know when you have good form?
When I don't overthink things and can roll from one task/decision to the next without questioning it.

How do you keep going when you're on the limit?
Not wanting to let myself or team mates down.

What is your career highlight?
I won some medals and had some decent results in the 49er, but joining Land Rover BAR is the biggest and most exciting step for my career so far.

If you weren't a sailor, what would you be?
Doing something practical and hands on.

Best advice?
Leave your battles on the race course, as a lot of people you race against in sailing will also become your good mates.

What other sports do you play now?
Will give anything a go, but surfing is a bit of an obsession.

How do you spend your time when you are not sailing?
I am a big football and Saints fan and like to spend any time off surfing - travelling and looking for waves.

Do you support any particular charities?
Surfers Against Sewage

Favourite Quote?
Not really big on quotes, but i googled some and I like this one - "Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it's stupid." Albert Einstein

Ed Powys

Ed Powys began his sailing career in Optimists, perhaps inevitable as he’s the son of a professional sailor (America’s Cup and Whitbread Race veteran Dave Powys). Ed progressed into the British Youth and Junior teams in the Optimist and 420. After graduating with a degree in Industrial Design from Brunel University he focused on sailing the Olympic 49er, and was a member of the British 49er squad from 2009 to 2014. He’s won medals in World Cup and Eurosaf events, and narrowly missed out on Olympic selection in 2012, becoming tune-up boat for Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes in Team GBR. Ed has also sailed high performance catamarans, racing in the Extreme Sailing Series in 2015 as mainsail trimmer aboard Oman Air. He also raced on the World Match Race Tour in 2014 as mainsail trimmer and tactician for Team Gilmour. He was part of the winning squad with land Rover BAR for the 2016 Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series. This will be Ed's first America's Cup.
