Land Rover BAR Academy top the leaderboard after day one of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (RBYAC). They started the day in fine form with two second placed finishes before ending in style with a dominating win in the third and final race of the day. The British team head into tomorrow’s final day with 28 points, seven points ahead of second placed Team Tilt (SUI) and Team France Jeune (FRA), both joint on 21 points.
The British entry, led by Skipper Rob Bunce, sailed conservatively and consistently in the shifty conditions, following three emphatic starts, and reached the top mark within the top three of the fleet in all of the races.
Helmsman, Chris Taylor “It’s been a great day for us, to get out there and put in a really solid performance. We worked hard on our starts and making sure we rounded the first mark in the top three. You can’t win the event in the first day, but you can lose it, so we are happy to have placed three top scores. However, tomorrow’s another day and tonight we will debrief as a team and come out fighting hard to stay on top.”
Elliot Hanson, Wing Trimmer followed “Tactically, we really tried to use the full width of the course today, which allowed us to get that extra separation and leverage from the fleet. We’ve done a lot of work on the boat handling in the Extreme Sailing Series over the past 18 months, and feel it’s really coming together nicely out here. Our tacking is also pretty solid, we feel in a good place and we are really looking forward to getting back out on the race course tomorrow.”
Six races are scheduled across the RBYAC finals, with three further races - in breezier conditions forecast – from 1400 local time on Wednesday 21st June. Watch tomorrow's racing live on Red Bull TV here.
