Land Rover BAR Academy on top after day one in Bermuda

Great Britain’s Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (RBYAC) entry, Land Rover BAR Academy, took to Bermuda’s Great Sound today winning two out of the three opening races. After posted a first, fourth and their second first in the final race, the team sit top of the leaderboard with 27 points – two points ahead of Spanish Impluse team - going into the second, and final, day of the RBYAC Qualifiers.

The team, led by 23-year-old Skipper Rob Bunce sailed consistently well, with smooth boat handling, despite the light and fickle conditions. The races were competed on the 35th America’s Cup race course, and in the Land Rover BAR’s senior team’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series boat, the AC45F. The RBYAC qualifiers will allow the top four of the six teams in each Pool to qualify into the RBYAC Finals, set to be held Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st June.

Rob Bunce, Skipper and birthday boy

“Today was the start to the regatta we were hoping for. The wind was hovering between 6-8 knots but we still pulled together three races we were happy with, which leaves us leading our pool after the first day. This stage is very much about getting ourselves in the top four to qualify for the RBYAC finals and we have put ourselves in a good place to do that after today. But, it’s a strong fleet and we have three more races tomorrow and are expecting the same conditions, so we have to really be on the ball to ensure we get the results in that we need.”

Main Trimmer, Elliot Hanson

“Today we had really light winds and we had to be accurate with every call we made and minimize manouvres to get ourselves around the course. We have been racing in a foiling catamaran for the past 18 months on the Extreme Sailing Series, in conditions like today, and this practice has really given us the confidence with our decision making as a team.”
